Benefits of Essential Oils for Oral Health


The benefits of essential oils are not hidden. As a matter of fact, recent researches now tend to prove the importance of essential oils for overall health. More specifically, these oils can be quite beneficial for your oral health and hygiene.


As it is the DIY treatment we are talking about, you need to be cautious about it because not all oils are good for your health. There are many types of oils which can hurt you when you apply them on your skin. Ingesting those oils can be even more dangerous.

Essential oils are usually extracted from plants. And those oils are sold singularly, i.e. one oil bottle is based on one ingredient only. However, you can also find the bottles with the blends of different oils mixed together. And since these oils fall into the category of supplements, their safety and efficacy are not regulated by Food and Drug Administration.

Use of essential oils for oral health

The best thing about essential oils is that they seem promising in not posing such risks to health.


The oils extracted from cinnamon, tea tree, peppermint and spearmint are known for being antimicrobial. It means that they kill germs which can cause pain, decay and other diseases and infections.

Myrrh oil is the oil which has the ability to heal inflamed tissues. Hence, it can soothe and heal the inflamed gum tissues. And if you have pain in the gums or any other type of toothache, you can use clove oil due to its amazing numbing effect.

Treatment with essential oils
Dentistry needs for different people are different. However, there are three basic things the dental patients need to be concerned about, i.e. tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. Good thing is that you can use essential oils to get help in all of these problems.


If the type of oil you have selected works well when used for mouth rinsing, you need to add a few drops of it in water. 5 – 10 drops are going to be enough in this scenario. Swishing one tablespoon every type you rinse your mouth should be enough for you to achieve fresh breath.

If you want to avoid tooth decay, you can add two drop of your choice of oil in the toothpaste and brush your teeth. Make sure that you spit out the oil and excess oil after brushing.
